steamed broccoli

to serve 4: 1-1 1/2 lbs broccoli (equals 1 cup steamed per person)

Stovetop method (no steamer needed):

  1. Cut broccoli into florets, rinse.

  2. Add about ½–1 inch of water to a saucepan and bring to a boil.

  3. Place broccoli in the pan (use a steamer basket if you have one, or just add directly).

  4. Cover with a lid and reduce heat to medium.

  5. Steam for 3–5 minutes until bright green and just tender (poke with a fork to test).

  6. Drain any excess water, season with salt, pepper, butter, or olive oil.

Microwave method (quickest):

  1. Put broccoli florets in a microwave-safe bowl.

  2. Add 2–3 tablespoons water.

  3. Cover with a microwave-safe plate or lid.

  4. Microwave on high for 2–4 minutes, depending on amount and desired tenderness.

  5. Carefully remove (steam will be hot), drain, and season.
